    Laureatus Potestates

Post  Phill on Thu May 03, 2012 7:21 pm

The Laureatus Potestates are unique miracles that stretch the boundaries of the Engel power-set. These powers are not well understood, for only a few Engel in any generation manage to create one. They are not taught as part of the regular curriculum in the Himmels, though their effects are whispered about among the elder Engel.

A Laureatus miracle is a mark of honor and distinction among the Engel. The name is derived from the Laurel Crown that God provided to Noah, showing his pleasure and mercy after the first Flood. They defy classification as Sigil, Signum, or Scriptura level powers, as some Laureatus can be of quite limited application. A Laureatus miracle is a unique use of the Order’s normal powers, trained by the prodigy Engel into something singular and separate from the rest of their powerset.

Example: A Gabrielite who has discovered a way to leech heat away from something with Ignis, causing it to frost over, is exhibiting a Laureatus Potestas.

The training of the Engel is very serious and focused on maximum efficiency. They are taught the Potestates that are the most useful in their Order mission. There is little time to experiment with off-point miracles. Still, these Laureatus exist and Engel have heard rumors about them. Some are developed by crazy insight, while others exist through careful study of another Order’s miracles.

For you guys, I’ll be listing a few Laureatus ideas from each Order. Since they are supposed to be rare, you can claim to have made them up in-character if you like. You could always say that you found an ancient record of the miracle instead. Make them yours, or make up new ones yourself. Laureatus are like when a superhero uses their normal power in an ingenious way, if you want an analogy. This system is meant to give you customization and separate you from the rest of the Engel. It is very unlikely that you could ever train another character to use the same Laureatus; they’re personalized techniques.

    Laureatus Mechanics
The Laureatus are all Stunts that alter regular uses of Potestates. Some will add new Trappings, while others will alter the way that other Stunts work. You always have the option to use the unaltered power instead of the Laureatus version. For example, if you have a Laureatus for Bolt of Authority that makes zapped people love you, you can choose to not apply that effect when you make the attack.
The universal prerequisite for any Laureatus is rank +8 or higher in both the Order’s available Potestates.

WHEEEE! I've had some time to work on these, so here you go. They totally haven't been balanced or playtested. I don't think that was the point.

Michaelites first, as per normal Order... order. Haven't typed up the Urielities yet, but I have the concepts.

Enjoy, and take any of this seriously (or not).

    Michaelitin Laureatus

Stammer – This Laureatus enhances Bolt of Authority, preventing struck targets from speaking falsehoods. There is an odd and embarrassing side effect which causes the victims to lose control of their bodily functions if they dissemble, but only God knows why that happens. Mechanics: Targets who suffer stress from Bolt of Authority or other attacks enhanced by/made via Fulminis receive the Stammer aspect, which has a persistent free tag for the scene and can be invoked to interrogate the victim, see through their lies, or reduce their Deceit rolls. The player of the victim can choose to buy off the persistent free tag, reducing it to a simple one-free tag, by having the character vomit up the entire contents of their stomach or evacuate their bowels and bladder.

Evangelize – The Michaelitin speak of the Love of God to others. What happens if they turn that inward? The result is usually sociopathy and insanity, save for the few who master this power. Unfortunately, the Fellowship of an Engel with this power suffers, as they withdraw from their Soul Communion to be with their own self-aggrandizing thoughts. This Laureatus enhances the Logos trapping to allow the Michaelitin to heal their psychic wounds and boost their social abilities. Mechanics: The character may now use Logos to heal their own Composure stress, mimicking the rules of the Raphaelite miracle Healing Hand. They may also use Inner Calm to place social-combat aspects on themselves, usually dealing with aloofness or detachment. If these abilities are used while the Michaelite is in a Communion of Souls, the psychic tautology reverberates through all the other members and deals 5 composure stress to each (full Edge piercing).

I Send My Lamb – If it were possible to somehow combine the powers of a Michaelite and a Urielite in one Engel, this miracle might exist. This Laureatus enhances Assisi and the Voice, allowing an animal to carry a message with holy power. Mechanics: The Engel can speak a few phrases to an animal, making a Logos roll to produce a delayed attack. The character can add in any Fate card uses they feel would be appropriate or stunts like Omnipotence (which operates on holiness). The animal then goes to the target and delivers the message with a burst of light, dying (exploding?) in the process. The target is affected by the attack and stunts as normal.

Call to Me – If it were possible to somehow combine the powers of a Michaelite and a Sammaelite in one Engel, this miracle might exist. This Laureatus allows the Engel to be summoned by a prayer, mystically crossing distances to a Logos beacon. Mechanics: The Engel may pay a Fate card and set up a one use prayer for a specific character. When that character calls out in prayer the Michaelitin can choose to appear in their area, bursting forth from the Merkahbah with light. This effect can only take place if the Michaelite is either within 100 yards of the praying target, or they are connected via Communion of Souls over any distance. Only one Call to Me prayer can be active at a time.

    Gabrielitin Laureatus

Crown of Mercy – Upon deep investigation a Gabrielite realized that his Crown of Thorns miracle drew on the power of his own bones, skin and blood. After much experimentation he realized two things: first, he could rearrange the shape and location of his tattoos, which is novel. Second, and more importantly, he found that he could turn his Thorns inward to stitch his wounds together. Mechanics: The Engel automatically removes 2 physical stress boxes whenever they deal damage via Crown of Thorns, and they add +2 to the roll of any Science based or Raphaelite potestates healing rolls on them. Additionally, the character can manipulate the shape and location of their tattoos.

Welcome the Blade – The mechanism by which Shield of Faith works is a mystery to the Gabrielites. Some brave children have sought to unlock its secrets with interesting results. This Laureatus enhances Shield of Faith to increase the velocity of metal-based attacks directed at the Engel, usually resulting in shattered weaponry. Alarmingly, arrows and bullets arc toward the Engel, sparing their Fellowship but endangering the Gabrielitin. Mechanics: If the character chooses to use Shield of Faith they increase the damage of any metal weapon/attack by 3. This includes non-ferrous metals. The metallic weapon receives 20 points of piercing physical stress after the attack (hit or miss), which is usually enough to break any normal object. Additionally, the Engel can pay a Fate card to redirect all metallic projectiles originally aimed at someone in his zone to target himself for the round. He must defend against these redirected attacks with Spathae, and they are all subject to the damage increase and breakage.

Salt the Fields – If it were possible to somehow combine the powers of a Gabrielite and a Ramielite in one Engel, this miracle might exist. This Laureatus enhances the prophetic and weakness-targeting powers of the Potestates sets, destroying the ability of a foe to make war. Mechanics: Upon striking a target with a melee attack, the Engel can invert the Spathae miracle and plague the victim with complete dyscoordination of their combat abilities. The Engel spends a Fate card and changes all the target’s positive personal physical aspects into weaknesses until the end of the Engel’s next action. Additionally, any of those aspects that were temporary are removed and cannot be applied again for the remained of the scene.

Loving Flame – If it were possible to somehow combine the powers of a Gabrielite and a Raphaelite in one Engel, this miracle might exist. This Laureatus enhances the Bitter Bile miracle, allowing it to turn poisons and illnesses into horrifying internal fire. Mechanics: The Engel may pay a Fate card when touching a target with a disease or poison (usually as an aspect) and cause that illness to erupt in mild fever or holy fire. This burns all the diseases and poisons out of the target. If the Engel chooses to produce a fever, then the target becomes slightly ill but swiftly recovers in a day. Healing miracles cannot assist with this. If the Engel chooses to burn the toxins out, the target takes 4 physical stress per toxin as piercing fire damage. If they survive they recover as normal. More stress can possibly be dealt (at the discretion of the GM) based on the virulence/toxicity of the burned out illnesses.

What have I done, posting these? God help us all...

    Raphaelitin Laureatus

Mother of Monsters – Only God himself knows why a Raphaelite would use their holy gift in such a fashion. This Laureatus probably started off as a blessing for strengthening a baby in the womb, but now results in the horrific death of the mother and the birth of an inhuman fetus. The baby is simultaneously fragile and strong, capable of crushing bones and windpipes easily. They have extra bones growing out of their bodies and very well developed muscles, but bestial intelligence and inexplicable wrath. All recorded cases of such monstrosities end with the slaughter of the monster-child, or its death within a few days. Rumors of monster-children with markings on their skin or tufts of down are obviously fabricated. Mechanics: The Engel may expend an additional Fate card upon activating Benediction to cause the gestation of a monster. This can also affect a currently enwombed normal fetus. The birth of the beast is accelerated, causes horrific (and usually fatal) internal trauma to the mother, and often results in the monster-child killing midwives or fathers as well.

Drink of my Blood – This strange Laureatus enhances the powers of the Raphaelite by allowing them to use the flesh of others to help heal wounds. By placing a substantial amount of blood or non-rotten flesh on an injury, the Healer can cause it to grotesquely absorb into the patient’s body, speeding the recovery process. Oddly, the few Engel who have this power also find that they can control the ooze created by Ashes to Ashes as well, and stranger things besides. Mechanics: The character receives a +2 bonus to their healing roll if they apply a generous portion of blood or uncooked, non-rotten meat to a wound. The blood or flesh is absorbed by the patient and the healing Raphaelite doesn’t count as having used Healing Hands on that target. Additionally, the ooze created from Ashes to Ashes can be used in the miracle, and the Engel can now control that ooze via Field of Bones.

Reach Out and Touch Faith – If it were possible to somehow combine the powers of a Raphaelite and a Raguelite in one Engel, this miracle might exist. This Laureatus makes it possible to transmit the healing powers of the White Engel through ancient advanced machina. Mechanics: So long as the Raphaelite and the target she wishes to heal both hold active advanced machina that can communicate with each other, the Raphaelitin can use Healing Hand, Succor, Faith of Job, or The All Seeing Eye on the target. This long distance miracle cannot benefit from any personal healing bonuses on the Raphaelite, like White Robed Mercy, but can benefit from bonuses on the target. Healing Hand cannot remove any consequences higher than Severe or transmit the effects of Benediction, Grail of Life, or Lazarus.

Heart of Hearts – If it were possible to somehow combine the powers of a Raphaelite and a Ramielite in one Engel, this miracle might exist. This Laureatus enhances the Raphaelite’s ability to heal the brain, but produces strange side effects. While this miracle can be used to restore memories or cure dementia and insanity, it somehow transfers some of the patient’s knowledge to the Engel as well. Mechanics: The Vitalis trappings of the Engel are enhanced and can now attempt to heal neurological damage and clinical insanity. The All Seeing Eye can also diagnose such conditions. Using this enhanced miracle deals 10 Composure stress to the Engel for every level of consequence (or Aspect severity) that they remove. This stress fades away immediately but is used to determine the strength of the memory that flows into them from the patient. Each level of consequence caused increases the importance (and probably the traumatic nature) of the memory shared with the Raphaelite. If the Raphaelite is Defeated through this damage, they lapse into a coma and believe themselves to be the patient upon waking. This effect probably wears off.

Last one for now! Also, best Ramielite miracles ever created.

    Ramielitin Laureatus

Bull of Condemnation – Some Ramielitin somewhere thought it would be a good idea to be able to punish his brothers through using their holy missive powers. This Laureatus enhances To Speak in Tongues, allowing it to carry screams of indignation and nonsense that deal Composure stress. As only Ramielites are capable of receiving such messages, the use is limited. Oddly, attack-messages left in the Cathedral persist and violently assault anyone who reads them; leading to occasional pranks or “Black Books” that new Ramielites are instructed never to read (which they of course do). Mechanics: The Engel may expend an Fate card to send a social attack along with a Speak in Tongues missive or to place one in a book in the Cathedral. The attacks are only for the purpose of inflicting Composure stress and manifest as insensate screaming and babble. It cannot be used to make a coherent argument, convince anyone of anything, or receive any information back. The attack resolves as a normal roll, but the only Consequences that can be proclaimed are things like “Shocked”.

Stupefy – This peculiar Laureatus renders the Ramielitin completely unintelligent for a preset amount of time. They barely move about, have no real thoughts or volition, and cannot take any action. On the plus side, if used carefully, it renders them immune to human social interaction. They have no memory of their dumb period, but snap out of their idiocy just as sharp as before. Mechanics: Once per scene the character can completely shut down their higher functions and language center, reducing the amount of Composure damage caused to them by their Astuatae, after Edge is applied. If any social or mental aspects or maneuvers are placed on them between activation and their next turn, they can remove them if they desire. Unfortunately, the Engel just kinda stands there like an idiot between activation and their next turn, so they suffer a penalty to their reflexive physical defenses (like Athletics or Melee) equal to their Astutae as well.

My first attempt, just spitballin' here:

Be Still, Thy Beating Heart – This Laureatus allows a Raphaelitin to magically and temporarily halt an ally's heart, preventing further blood loss and hemorrhaging. The target will be able to performs actions as normal, but is unhindered by any previous wounds. Mechanics: The target suffers from no consequences until the end of the scene, allowing the character to continue to fight, even after filling all stress bars. Enemies can no longer tag consequences for any benefits. Any stress taken above their normal limit is then transferred to the Raphaelitin at the end of the scene.

I Send My Lamb should be a Urielite stunt. It fits better into their idiom, I guess. You know: heart powers and napalm blood.
